294. Anniversary of our Fraternity

Our student fraternity is the oldest and one of the most traditional societies in Germany. We were founded in 1716 in Leipzig and moved to Münster as a result of the ban on fraternities in the Third Reich and in the former GDR in the 1960s. In 1969 we merged with the fraternity Westfalen, which had been resident in Münster since 1920, to the Soraben-Westalen. Our society is not politically or religiously bound. Extremists regardless whether left-wing or right-wing are not tolerated.

As a fraternity under the roof of the Coburger Convent and because of our history we are a dueling society. Consequently each member takes part in at least three duels with members from other fraternities. We also follow the principle of lifelong alliance and friendship which means that the individual cares for the other members. Graduated members support the younger members. In other words we offer comfort and advantages to our members. For our student-members we provide a wide range of supporting measures, such as training periods, trainee-programs, and we give support with studying. We regularly invite experts and have experts in our rows who give talks on economical, political and historical subjects. Moreover we teach competence in soft skills. Hence, in our society we do not accept fellow travellers. Each member must dedicate himself to the fraternity.

Because we represent democratic principles, the student-members choose their own board of heads in charge each semester. The exercise of such offices and of the management functions acquires enormous responsibility, but also includes chances for the students. They can try themselves out in "enterprise guidance" and define for themselves and the group goals which help them move together. For each semester the students develop a “semesterprogram”, a kind of schedule for the semester, which includes talks, cultural arrangements, parties and trips. Our students can learn different social competences which will be useful for life. During the period of studying we support our young members and lead them to graduation, in exchange we expect from them to give support to others when they have reached a secure position on the job market – this is part of our principle of life long friendship. Because of this interdependence there is a positive interaction and dynamism guaranteed: Old and young come together, and while others often have lost trace with their university in later years, we still have a home in our university town.
